She is baaack!!!

Polly Green has been a Kokatat sponsored athelete from the early days of her paddling life. She is re-entering the professional paddling scene, using her film-making skills to document her journey:

“My goal in life has been to be a world champion athlete since I was seven years old. My hero at the time was the Olympic gymnast Nadia Comaneci, who had just scored the first perfect ten. I wanted to be her. The closest I came to realizing my dream was in 2003 at the Freestyle Kayak World Championships in Graz (Austria), where I came 5th. I was devastated. My fire burnt out after 2003, and even though I hung in there for a few more years, I knew deep down it was time to move on, and give the rest of life a go. I pursued my filmmaking career, learned to surf, started a regular yoga practice, and began making art again. I thought my competition days were over.

A few months ago my friend, Arnd Schaeftlein came to visit and go surfing. We got to talking about the last world championships, and he off handedly said “you know Polly, if you started training again I think you could be in the top ten at the next worlds” and I replied “If I start training again I don’t want to be top ten I want to win”. A seed was planted that day. A week later I left to go on a ten- day meditation course. That course was the hardest thing I have ever done. Ten days of sitting in silence for 11 hours a day. It relit my fire. I realized that my dream of being the world champion was still in me, and if I didn’t go for it I would regret it for the rest of my life. I made a commitment to myself then and there that I was going to go for it and start training for the 2011 World Championships, and make a film about my journey. I knew that this time around I had to do things differently. The last time things felt self-centered and ego driven. This time it is not so much about proving I can win to the world, but is more about fulfilling a deep-seated childhood dream that I can’t explain. It just feels now like it is something I have to do.

This journey to the world championships is about more than winning a gold medal. Through making a film I am sharing my experiences and lessons I learn along the way. I am out to discover what it takes to be a winner, and what it means to be a winner not just on the water, but in life. There are people that will help me along the way in my quest to find the answers including top-level sports psychologists, neuroscientists, and psychics. I am striving this time to maintain a holistic approach to my training, maintaining balance, awareness and appreciation for the fact that I am even able to go for my dream in the first place. What happens at the world championships is only a part of the dream. My goal is to appreciate the journey as much as the outcome, and to live my days knowing that I gave it my best shot.” – Polly Green

Golden Gate Sea Kayak Symposium

Kokatat’s Sea Kayaking Ambassador Jeff Allen attended the Golden Gate Sea Kayak Symposium last weekend. here’s what Jeff has to say about the event:

“This was the 2nd Golden Gate Sea Kayak Symposium (GGSKS), although only my first, and I was surprised at just how well organised the event was. You would think that it had been running for years, it went off so smoothly.

San Francisco can receive a mixed bag of weather conditions and this three day event held no exceptions there. Gale force winds and heavy rain one day, bright sunshine and gorgeous blue skies the next. Not a great deal of activity took place outside of the Gate due to 20 foot swells, which kept all but the most experienced paddlers inside of this unique harbour. This was not a disappointment, the spring tides and refracting swell on Yellow Bluff created a perfect environment for both the intermediate and advanced sessions; everyone expanded their learning curve beyond the horizon at some time or other.

Kokatat Ambassador Freya Hoffmeister gave a talk on her recent circumnavigation of Australia on Saturday night. It was great to hear first hand of her experiences and her opening comments said it all: “People said that I was attempting to circumnavigate around Australia, believe me, there was never any attempt, in my mind only conclusion”. When this women sets her sight on a target you know she’s going to give it her all and hit bulls eye! Well done Freya, you’ve taken the world of sea kayaking by storm and proved what most men and women thought impossible.

The idea of creating the GGSKS lay with Sean Morley and Jen Kleck but this year Jen could not be there, and Sean made sure that all who attended knew where the steam behind the event had come from – Matt Palmariello. Matt put a great deal of time and effort into ensuring that this years event would not only run smoothly, but also ensured that all participants would leave with a big smile on their faces, well he certainly achieved a triple ace on my cards.

Here’s looking forward to next years event!” All the best,

Jeff Allen

Paddle around Orcas Island will raise money for the YMCA’s Partners With Youth Campaign

Alex Okerman is leaving this Friday to raise money for the PWY: “The idea to paddle around Orcas Island to raise money for the YMCA’s Partners With Youth Campaign (PWY) was born during a staff meeting. I was sitting there, surrounded by my co-workers, listening to our campaign kick-off lecture, and thinking about all the amazing paddling trips going on at the time: Freya’s Race Around Australia, Hayley Shepard’s Circumnavigation of South Georgia, and Marcus Demuth and Biff Wruszek’s attempt at Tierra Del Fuego to name a few. You see, I constantly find myself day dreaming about my own expedition somewhere remote, challenging, and beautiful, and I’m inspired by the incredible expeditions that are being accomplished in the world of sea kayaking. However, my reality of taking a year off or even three months to complete a trip is not realistic right now. I would imagine this to be the case with many other sea kayakers out there. What is realistic are the day trips I can go on, the epic weekend get aways, and the week long paddling trips during my sacred vacation time. Thankfully Washington allows me to embark on these smaller trips which in turn fulfills my need to paddle and continually push my skills.

When I refocused my attention during the staff meeting we were onto discussing how each staff member was going to raise money for the campaign. I asked myself a few questions: What am I passionate about? What’s going to be a realistic goal with my schedule? What’s close to Seattle, challenging, and meaningful? How can I raise money doing something I love for something I believe in? As I asked myself these questions my excitement started to build, and by the end of the staff meeting I had a rough sketch of a short but meaningful expedition.

From March 5th to the 7th I am planning a 2-3 day solo circumnavigation around Orcas Island (WA) to raise money for the YMCA’s annual Partners With Youth (PWY) Campaign. Using sea kayaking as my medium, I intend to raise $1,000.00 that will go towards our overall YMCA campaign goal of $530,000. This money will be used for YMCA programs that build self confidence, teach leadership skills, and reinforce positive values.

The route I have chosen for the fundraiser visits places where I remember falling in love with paddling. Departing from YMCA’s CampOrkila, I will paddle past Point Doughty where I spent many summer nights watching blazing San Juan Island sunsets, past Doe Island where I remember feeling suffocated by the thick fog that roars down Rosario Straight, past the wild flowers and birds of Yellow Island and finally past Jones where I remember discovering how much fun high school kids and young adults can have during games of capture the flag, charades, and eating contests. Not only is Orcas Island rich with memories for me, but I’ve witnessed first time paddlers and kids who’ve never left the city get swept away by the beauty, power, and lessons that Orcas Island and paddling can provide. Most of these memories would not have happened without YMCA programs that PWY supports and thus, as I began planning my fundraiser for this year, I chose the route around Orcas Island.

To learn more about the campaign and donate to the cause you can go to seattleymca.donordrive.com, and search for Alex Okerman.

Special thanks to Kokatat and Body Boat Blade, Int. for supporting me on my paddling trip! You can contact me for more information at alexokerman@gmail.com. Photos courtesy of Lily Tharp.

Go Wild Expedition Presents First Slideshow

Thursday night (2/26) Ed’s Cantina in Estes Park, Colorado hosted the first of many Go Wild Expedition slideshow presentations. Phil Magistro and Apryle Craig presented their 1200 mile kayak journey up the historical Inside Passage route, where they examined the effects of salmon farms on the environment and local communities. During their slideshow, they discussed route highlighs, cooking, camping, and gear choices, including the breathability of the Kokatat dry suits, convenience of the relief zips, and unique ergonomic fit of Apryle’s SeaO2 lifejacket – perfect for her petite frame.

The team broke up their photos with a video they created showcasing their experiences with salmon along the coast. After the video, they explained the specific issues with open-net salmon farming, and what individuals can do to help. The video featured a soundtrack titled River Runnin’ written and sang by one of the generous people they met along their trip. Despite the small turnout due to the weather, the folks who did come out received a more personal account of the couple’s trip while enjoying free appetizers compliments of Ed’s Cantina. Attendees won prizes from sponsors including Kokatat, and received copies of the Seafood Watch Guide to Sustainable Seafood. Donations were collected to benefit Living Oceans Society. Everyone enjoyed a great evening and Phil and Apryle look forward to future opportunities to continue encouraging people to “Go Wild” in support of wild salmon.

Watch their blog for future slideshow dates and locations, or contact them at philandapryle@elevatedattitude.com to schedule a presentation near you!

This Is Canoeing!

Team Kokatat paddler Justine Curvengen has had a busy last few years. After putting the wraps on a series of award-winning sea kayaking films called “This is the Sea,” Justine has been back behind (…and in front!) of the camera promoting the less attention grabbing (but equally fun) discipline of canoeing. The product is Justine’s latest venture, “This Is Canoeing”, where 12 short films examine the styles and personalities of the canoeing community. Justine takes you on a worldwide tour of storied canoeing destinations in the US, Scotland, Canada and Wales In about three hours, filmed with POV perspective via head-cams and boat-mounted cameras.

As a sponsor of “This Is Canoeing”, Kokatat wants to congratulate Justine on winning two best-of-category awards at two different paddling film festivals: Reel Paddling Film Fest’s “Best Canoeing Film” and the Waterwalker Film Festival’s “Best Canoeing Film.”

Justine has showered Kokatat with compliments for the way her apparel performed during the making of “This Is Canoeing”. She said, “I relied on two pieces of apparel during the filming, and depending on the conditions my Kokatat dry suit or bibs kept me warm and dry. Thanks to Kokatat for sponsoring the DVD, which brings family adventure, exciting whitewater & interesting stories into every canoeists living room.”

“This Is Canoeing” will see its world premier during Canoecopia, March 12-14 in Madison, WI.

You can check out the trailer for “This Is Canoeing” on YouTube, and pre-order the DVD from Justine’s website.

Freya Hoffmeister- Race Around Australia Seattle Presentation

Freya’s West Coast Tour…don’t miss it! Barb Gronseth, from Kayak Academy, tells us about the Freya Hoffmeister’s Race Around Australia” presentation that took place in Seattle.

“Kayak Academy and Sea Kayaker Magazine hosted Freya’s “Race around Australia” presentation in Seattle Feb 16th. Avid Seattle-area paddlers poured in from all points for the opportunity to meet Freya. Some had followed her blog throughout the trip and others logged in for the tougher phases of the trip. Her initial slide of Australia super imposed over Europe helps you grasp the immensity of her circumnavigation and then her year unfolds with photos of beautiful scenery and marine life.

The next day, I was off on my own travels, to Whistler and the Olympics. Gazing at out the bus window at Howe Sound my thoughts turned to the night before and Freya’s presentation. Stories abound of her courage, determination, what percentage of her trip was supported, the number of technological communication devices used but what affected me most was the excitement of watching her succeed. We, sea kayakers don’t have a world cup or Olympic ski racer to follow down the race course and to the finish but we do have images of Freya punching out through the surf and at the Finish. She won her race, what’s your next adventure?”

-Barb Gronseth

Tonight at 6:30pm  Freya will be giving her presentation in Eureka, CA at the Wharfinger Building.  Then she will be at the Golden Gate Sea Kayak Symposium This weekend 2/26-2/28.  There will be another presentation during the symposium on 2/27. Check out the full tour schedule to see if Freya is coming to a town near you!

…and the Reel Paddling Film Festival award goes to…

The 5th Annual Reel Paddling Film Festival has started its tour around the world anew. RPFF kicked off it’s nearly year-long tour last week in Toronto with the winning films from nine different categories being premiered for the first time. When all is said and done the festival will show the best paddlesports films to upwards of 20,000 people, and Kokatat is the sponsor of the best adventure/travel paddling film category. The tour plays to audiences in Canada, the US, and other countries around the world. Kokatat’s sponsorship isn’t our only contribution: Team Kokatat paddler Justine Curvengen submitted and won the Best Canoeing Film for her film “This Is Canoeing”. TIC is a production that celebrates canoeing and showcases some of most talented paddlers, wilderness explorers, and whitewater adventures.

Kokatat was an expedition sponsor for J.J. Kelly and Josh Thomas’ “Paddle To Seattle” – a trip they documented and later turned into a film of the same name. It won Best Sea Kayaking Film, and documents Kelly and Thomas’ use of homemade wooden boats as they kayak the 1,300-mile Inside Passage from Alaska to Seattle.

Last year Kokatat had two sponsored films as winners: Bryan Smith’s “Eastern Horizons” won best sea kayaking film, and Justine Curgenven’s “This is the Sea 4: New Zealand circumnavigation” won best adventure/travel paddling film. Finally – for you Canoecopia attendees – Justine’s film will debut outside of the Reel Fest for the first time during the Canoecopia show weekend. Congrats Justine, J.J., and Josh!

For a list of all world tour films, schedule, and hosting information visit www.reelpaddlingfilmfestival.com. Tour hosts usually sell tickets for their local screening, and use the world tour to generate preseason excitement as a fundraiser or an evening’s entertainment for a paddling event or festival.

Partner of the Month: First Descents

1stdescents

Kokatat has been a multi-year supporter of First Descents, and we’re excited to announce FD as our “Partner of the Month” for February. During the term of the partnership, Kokatat has provided elite level dry tops, dry suits, life jackets, hand- and footwear to FD alums. Kokatat’s own Brad Ludden has been a Kokatat sponsored athlete since 2003, spending an incredible amount of time on the water with our products, and organizing impactful causes off the water. This summer Kokatat Ambassador Christie Glissmeyer will be teaching at select FD camps. Check back on the blog for more details in the coming months!

Kokatat supports First Descents because the organization is committed to curing young adults of the emotional effects of cancer and empowering them to regain control of their lives through paddlesports.
