Kokatat Team member Tanya Faux sent in exciting news of a significant win to protect the North Kimberley region of Australia. On November 12, 2009 the Norwegian owned aluminum corporation Norsk-Hydro released a statement that they will stop plans to open bauxite strip mining operation on the Mitchell Plateau, part of the North Kimberley region. The company is turning in its mining leases to the state government. Full story HERE.
“The power of the peoples vote can work. This is very encouraging news!” – said Tanya when she relayed the good news. She led two expeditions to the remote Kimberley region in 2007 and 2008 to bring awareness of the need to protect this pristine wilderness. The 2008 expedition won the Australian Adventure of the year!
