High water comes with great responsibility

Kokatat Team paddler and current World Freestyle Kayak Champion Nick Troutman is loving the high water play in Colorado this summer:

“For the last month, Colorado has been the warmest I have ever seen. As everyone knows when the warm weather comes, the snow melts, and what happens with snow melt. HIGH WATER! Almost the whole state has been flooding, including the famous Glenwood Springs waves. Everyone and their grandmother were in the lineup to surf, including Team Kokatat paddlers Ruth Gordon, Jason Craig and myself Nick Troutman. Here are is a video clip from my two days of surfing the waves.” – Nick Troutman

Dustin Urban wins at 2010 FIBArk Whitewater Festival

Kokatat whitewater ambassador Dustin Urban wins at the 2010 FIBArk Whitewater Festival last weekend.

“Today I thought I’d give a first person account of my win this past weekend at the 62nd FIBArk whitewater festival 25 miles south of Buena Vista in Salida Colorado. Let me begin by saying that this was the first time I have won FIBArk, and to do so with so many local friends and fans cheering me on, and with such stiff competition, was thrilling and definitely a highlight of my career. It was also among my most decisive wins, so I won’t try to hide that I’m pretty fired up about it!

What I love most about competing at the highest level of freestyle kayaking is the combination of mental and physical balance and focus that it requires to do well. For finals Saturday night, I found “the zone,” but it was certainly a journey getting there.

The water levels combined with long lines made it pretty challenging mentally for a lot of folks as we practiced in the days leading up to the event – I know it was for me. With high water levels, it was harder to stick high-scoring tricks; the challenge for me was to figure things out without getting frustrated. After a couple sessions I had figured out how to be consistent with a handful of the bigger moves, and my plan was to also link together a bunch of lower scoring moves like blunts and splitwheels.

Preliminaries were held Friday evening, and by that time the water had dropped enough to make the hole a lot easier. It was still possible to flush on any number of moves, but single ride scores over 1,000 were evidence of the more forgiving conditions. I sat in fifth after the cut to the top 10 men.

Semifinals were held Saturday afternoon, and the cut from 10 to 5 was very close, with less than a 50-point spread between 3rd and 7th. I made the cut by a mere 5 points with Clay Wright tight on my heels. The fact that former world champion and freestyle legend Eric ‘EJ’ Jackson and reigning world champion and Kokatat Team Paddler Nick Troutman both missed this cut is evidence of how deep and competitive the field was- not all events are this way.
As with prelims, it was the 16-year-old phenom and reigning Junior World Champion Jason Craig in the lead after semis. I love Jason’s smooth yet explosive style- it’s safe to say that he’s the most competitive 16-year-old in the history of the sport. It wasn’t until 18 that myself and other juniors of my generation were giving the pro men a run for their money.

And then there were finals. Sitting in 5th, I took the first run of finals. The banks were packed with spectators still jazzed from the Hooligan Race and Women’s freestyle finals. The energy was high, and I was able to feed off it, setting the bar with the highest scoring event of the competition, 1220 points. It’s not often that the first ride of finals is also the winning ride. Even with some of my biggest wins at Teva Mountain Games and other events, It’s often my 2nd or 3rd ride that wins it. Throwing a 1220 as my first ride made for a unique and much-less-stressful finals experience.

I knew my first ride would almost certainly put me on the podium, but 2009 FIBArk/National Champion Stephen Wright came incredibly close to beating me in his first ride, which came in a mere 10 points behind my score. With a simple flat spin scoring 10 points, this was insanely close and made me think that my first ride might not actually win it. Big props to Stephen for hanging in there despite an upper-respiratory infection that had him dry heaving between rides.

So I came into my 2nd ride with the goal of scoring higher. I also had the benefit of feeling relaxed and confident with my first ride under my belt; I think that really helped me. After a shaky start, I found the zone and started ticking off my moves- huge clean loop, Space Godzillas, McNasties in both directions. My secret weapon in finals was Lunar Orbits in both directions, adding 300 points to my score. I personally think this move is over-valued on the score sheet, but without it I don’t know that I could have won, especially since my Phonics Monkeys (terrible name) were really inconsistent. In the end, this was the highest-scoring ride I’ve ever thrown, coming in at 1305. Nonetheless, my 1st ride still would have won it.

Anyhow, that’s the blow-by-blow for you. I feel really fortunate to have stepped it up for such a big event. FIBArk is a legendary festival for good reason; with dozens of food and craft vendors, outstanding and free live music in the park, a family-friendly atmosphere and a myriad of athletic events, it truly is ‘the oldest and boldest whitewater festival’ in the nation.” – Dustin Urban

Paddling Life Pro Invitational

Kokatat team paddler Nick Troutman nabs top honors at the Paddling Life Pro Invitational, while Ruth Gordon and Emily Jackson tie for first overall in the women’s division.

With Mother Nature finally relinquishing her winter wares, world freestyle kayak champion Nick Troutman retained his title at the fifth annual Paddling Life Invitational on Mon., May 31, by placing fourth in the creek race and first in freestyle to bring home the combined crown.

Capping off the weekend-long 30th anniversary of the Yampa River Festival, Troutman earned the title after earning 19 points for his fourth-place showing on the extreme race down Fish Creek, finishing behind Sam Sutton and Brad Lauder of New Zealand, and Corey Volt in third. In the afternoon’s freestyle event, he made up for lost time by edging out Stephen Wright and Volt in the finals in Charlie’s Hole downtown. Sutton followed Troutman in second place overall, with two-time Invitational champion Stephen Wright taking third overall.

For the women, with three-time winner Tanya Faux of Australia sidelined with the flu, Emily Jackson and Ruth Gordon traded one-two finishes to settle for a tie for first place overall. Jackson finished first in the creek race and second in freestyle, with Gordon making up for her second-place creek race showing with a dynamic victory in freestyle. Sarah Hamilton took third.

Featuring an all-star cast of some of the world’s best kayakers, the event drew two current world freestyle champions, as well as a former world champion, to Steamboat for the two-event competition offering more than $3,500 in cash and prizes. “All in all, it was a great event,” says Paddling Life’s Eugene Buchanan, adding that it couldn’t be done without the support of such sponsors as Steamboat in the Summertime, Kokatat, NRS, MTI and others. “It’s pretty unique to test competitors in both downriver and freestyle in the same event.”

“It’s an awesome format,” says Gordan, now on her way to the Teva Mountain Games. “You have to be good at both river running and freestyle to pull off a win.” Adds Troutman: “It was an awesome day…great water levels and even better weather.”

Canoecopia 2010 – it’s a wrap!

It was another great year at Canoecopia for Kokatat. We sold plenty of product, sat in on presentations, and bonded with folks who share a collective passion for paddlesports. With a solid crew from Arcata and some of our sponsored athletes in attendance (Ben Lawry, Nick Troutman, Anna Levesque, and Justine Curgenven) we were able to help beginners and experienced paddlers alike to find the perfect gear (at a discount!), share stories of fun times on the water, and reconnect with old friends.

It’s an exciting time to be around paddlers in the Midwest, as spring was beginning to show its face. There was a sense of excitement in the crowd, knowing it would just be a matter of time before they were able to head out on the season’s first paddle. That said, ice fisherman clung to what’s left of the winter’s freeze, and could be spotted dropping line from their shacks all weekend on nearby Madison lakes.

Team Kokatat’s Nick Troutman interviewed at Canoecopia 2010 from Kokatat Watersports Wear on Vimeo.

Our athletes had a busy weekend spending time in the booth and giving presentations. Anna Levesque offered a chance to quiet the mind and stretch the body in her “yoga for paddlers” classes. A certified yoga instructor, Anna caters her classes to paddlers’ specific needs. She also spent a good chunk of the weekend educating women about correct paddling techniques and talking about her Girls At Play organization and instructional trips.

Justine introduces her new film “This Is Canoeing” at Canoecopia from Kokatat Watersports Wear on Vimeo.

Justine Curgenven used Canoecopia as the world premier venue for her latest film “This Is Canoeing.” A large crowd came out on Saturday night to the High Noon Saloon for the show. Justine also offered presentations on her circumnavigation of New Zealand, and a special Sunday morning behind the scenes slideshow and Q&A about the film.

Kokatat’s sponsored partner Northern Forest Canoe Trail had a booth set-up, offering tips on how to best plan and experience this amazing water trail. The NFCT just released a new guide book in time for Canoecopia, and founder Rob Center was around to discuss the journey. Everyone loves Rob’s passion about paddlesports, it’s contagious!

Canoecopia founder and Rutabaga Paddlesports owner Darren Bush perhaps said it best on Saturday night, when addressing a large group of vendors and manufacturers he stated that every year Canoecopia reaffirms his faith in good people, healthy living, and the fundamental enjoyment of getting outdoors. Cheers to that, and see you in 2011!
